By-Johans Rogers,
On the 16th
of April, while some of us were enjoying our extended holiday and others were
heading off to work. No 18, Elliot place was getting ready to celebrate Avurudu
at the Sri Lanka unites office.
“The Sinhalese and
Tamil New Year, generally known as Aluth Avurudda (අලුත්
අවුරුද්ද) in Sri Lanka, is
the new year celebrated by the Buddhists and Hindus in Sri Lanka.
According to
astrology, New Year begins when the sun moves from Meena Rashiya (the house of
Pisces) to Mesha Rashiya (the house of Aries). It also marks the end of the
harvest and spring.” - Wikipedia
As it depicts the
Sinhala and Tamil New Year is an event celebrated by all Sri Lankans alike.
It’s the time of the year when sweet meats unique to Sri Lanka decorate the
table.
As the fire was
brought to life we were all waiting for the milk to overflow! And it did
leading everyone to the neatly laid out Avurudu table full of delicious food
and drink. Everyone was enjoying
themselves and satisfying their taste buds while they were catching up with old
friends and making new ones.
After the meals comes
the traditional games, even thought we had limited space in the office we
managed to play a few games like: feeding yogurt, tug of war and eyeing the
elephant with the ladies finally managing to put one over the guys in a tug of
war (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YC4LE3pozjs&list=UUW7KfzTVHcSThNZoTwSXaLw )
At the end of the day everyone
enjoyed them-selves and were glad to be back with all their friends, some of
which they have not met each other in a while. With all the fun and joy coming
to an end as the Avurudu Celebrations came to a halt and the team knew of their
which lies ahead in the lead up to the Future Leaders Conference Season – 6.
The best is yet to come
